Summertime total ozone variations over middle and polar latitudes

چکیده
[1] The statistical relationship between springtime and summertime ozone over middle and polar latitudes is analyzed using zonally averaged total ozone data. Shortterm variations in springtime midlatitude ozone demonstrate only a modest correlation with springtime polar ozone variations. However by early summer, ozone variations throughout the extratropics are highly correlated. Analysis of correlation functions indicates that springtime midlatitude ozone, not polar ozone, is the best predictor for summertime polar ozone. Long-term total ozone trends at middle and high latitudes are also different for spring and nearly identical for summer. About 39% of the observed southern midlatitude ozone decline in December can be attributed to the polar ozone depletion up to November. In the Northern Hemisphere, the corresponding contribution is about 15%, but the error bars are too large to make an accurate estimate. Citation: Fioletov, V. E., and T. G. Low ozone concentrations over Macquarie Island during 1997 Part I: trajectory analysis
Ozone concentrations have been decreasing globally for the last 20 years in part due to increasing chlorine concentrations in the stratosphere (WMO 1999). The most dramatic example of these reductions has been identified in the high latitude southern hemisphere, where ozone levels are nearly entirely depleted in the lower stratosphere during September and October each year. This phenomenon, whi...
متن کاملPersistence and photochemical decay of springtime total ozone anomalies in the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model
The persistence and decay of springtime total ozone anomalies over the entire extratropics (midlatitudes plus polar regions) is analysed using results from the Canadian Middle Atmosphere Model (CMAM), a comprehensive chemistry-climate model. As in the observations, interannual anomalies established through winter and spring persist with very high correlation coefficients (above 0.8) through sum...

We present a study of the seasonal and interannual variations of the export pathways of pollution from Europe for eleven years, 1987-1997, using the GEOS-CHEM model of 3-d trace gas/aerosol chemistry and transport. The dominant export pathways in winter are advection to i. the middle and high latitudes of the North Atlantic Ocean, including the European Arctic; ii. Russia and the Russian Arctic...
متن کاملGlobal distribution of total ozone and lower stratospheric temperature variations
This study gives an overview of interannual variations of total ozone and 50 hPa temperature. It is based on newer and longer records from the 1979 to 2001 Total Ozone Monitoring Spectrometer (TOMS) and Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV) instruments, and on US National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalyses. Multiple linear least squares regression is used to attribute variatio...

We report results from a multiple linear regression analysis of long-term total ozone observations (1979 to 2000, by TOMS/SBUV), of temperature reanalyses (1958 to 2000, NCEP), and of two chemistry-climate model simulations (1960 to 1999, by ECHAM4.L39(DLR)/CHEM (=E39/C), and MAECHAM4-CHEM). The model runs are transient experiments, where observed sea surface temperatures, increasing source gas...
